IMPORTANT DATA PROTECTION UPDATE
The EU Data Protection Commissioner recently published the new DP regulations, which are due to take effect in March, 2014. The Regulations, if they remain in their current form, will contain some significant changes in definition and perspective for any organisation actively processing personal data. This is particularly true for the Direct Marketing sector, and especially for organisations that operate as Data Processors. The proposed New DP Regulations and Recent IDMA Submission to the Minister for Justice, was discussed in a breakfast briefing on 11 May 2012 by Daragh O’Brien & Hugh Jones, IDMA Regulatory Affairs Expert Panel.
A Networking Evening took place on Thursday April 19th at the Terrace Bar in Odessa, Dame Lane, Dublin 2. The focus was How to win more client business in 2012! Brian Sparks from Agency Assessments International talked about how to excell at the pitching process. This ties in with the new Pitch Doctor Express service from IDMA www.pitchdoctor.ie.
IDMA Regulatory Affairs Team organised Dialogue Dates for members during March regarding the proposed changes to the recent EU proposals to strengthen data protection safeguards:

On 9th December 2011, the AGM was held in the Clarence Hotel, Dublin before IDMA Members and their guests enjoyed a delicious lunch, festive drinks and chat, sprinkled with seasonal fun and music. In July, 2011, new legislation was introduced to regulate the use of electronic communications for direct marketing. While the regulations brought clarity on some issues - retention of client data, 'opting in' versus 'opting out', usage of automated dialling and cookies, etc., it has left a few perennial issues still open to interpretation. One sticking point is the seemingly basic question: "Who is my customer?".
In this presentation on 2nd December 2011, Hugh Jones, Data Protection specialist and a member of the IDMA's Regulatory sub-committee, looked at these challenges, illustrating the issues with reference to case studies from the Irish direct marketing sector. Based on his own experience, as well as reference to recent comments from the office of the Irish Data Protection Commissioner, Hugh outlined ine some 'best practice' solutions, as well as offered suggestions on how companies can continue to promote their goods and services while complying with the new legislation."
On 26 October 2011, this IDMA Seminar was hosted by Leanne Papaioannou, a specialist in customer retention and loyalty. Leanne gave a global insight into what is hot in Loyalty and showed how to unlock the value within your existing customers by increasing their loyalty with your brand. We walked away with loyalty insights and tools to be implemented immediately and included in planning for 2012.
